Lee Friedlander: Mannequin

Lee Friedlander [b. 1934] is one of the most influential American photographers of the past five decades. For Mannequin, he returned to the hand-held 35-mm camera, photographing storefront windows and reflections across New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco to explore sex, fashion, and consumerism. Made with deceptively straightforward compositions, the photographs recall Eugène Atget’s Parisian window studies while appearing almost as though they have been torn apart and reassembled. Friedlander first gained recognition through the landmark 1967 New Documents exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, and his expansive body of work has since been the subject of more than forty books and major museum retrospectives.
