5’8″ FAKTION FROCKET
Shaper FAQ’s with Mark Petrocelli:
Where are you shaping and surfing?
Shaping: Long Island, NY. But I’m not just a shaper that hands my boards off to someone to glass, it’s not an option living in New York. I’m currently building all my boards start to finish myself. It’s nice to have a hands on approach to every aspect of building each board. The only downfall is when something goes wrong, I can’t blame it on anyone else…ha. I have been surfing all around the world but there is still no place like home.
What year did you start shaping?
I shaped a few boards 2000-2003, but started the Faktion label in 2006 and it’s been full time since then.
What are you currently riding?
I am usually riding anything short and stubby, 3 or 4 fins with a lot of volume. Every year it seems I’m going smaller and smaller. Right now I’m super stoked on this 5’4? x 20 x 2 5/8 super wide rounded squashtail quad. The board goes where ever you want it to go and it’s lightning fast.
What trends have you noticed in board design recently?
The trends really depends on what type of shapes you are focused on and comfortable shaping. For me, it’s mostly performance shorts and fish. I guess the trend would be going back to more of ’80s outlines, fuller nose and tails and more overall volume.
What’s your shaping philosophy?
Slow and steady wins the race…
Who is your biggest shaping influence?
There are so many that have influenced me over the years. It really just depends on what type of board I am shaping. I guess since I do a lot of shorts I would have to say Matt Biolis, Rick Hamon, Peter Scroff, Simon Anderson… the list goes on for days.
What do you consider to be your expertise?
I don’t consider myself an expert at anything. It seems everyday I am learning something new whether it’s shaping, glassing, sanding or color work. Building boards is just like surfing, there is always something new and refreshing that keeps you striving to get better.
