Shaper FAQ’s with Steve Pendarvis:
Where are you shaping and surfing?
Well, my workshop is close to home in San Diego, and that’s where I shape and glass. Most of my water time is in SD, as well.
What year did you start shaping?
Not really supposed to know. 1966-1971 were some of the developmental years, with wood paipos (bellyboards), right on through to Pendo Pinners and Wibbulators.
What are you currently riding?
Lately, I’m mostly riding a 6’3? quadraflex twin stick EPS Pendoflex. Ah yes, it has a very sensitive gas pedal. Also, there’s a lot of 4th Gear Flyer matt riding, not to mention various eight-foot egg fun boards with Pendoflex. There’s also a 10’1? coastal cruiser Frye-o-flex Eagle that is just outstanding. The area you cover is amazing! On its day, a 5’8? keel Fish Lis-o-flex gets run through the bait ball, then twenty-yard cutbacks, just fly’n!
What trends have you noticed in board design recently?
My thoughts on design directions go directly to the cats at the America’s Cup, not to mention foiled kite boards, holy cow! One design trend is shorter, wider EPS, buoyant little shred machines of various demeanors, wreaking havoc on short interval little pop-up peaks. Another important thought is sustainability, new resins, cores and different cloths. It’s all very exciting! Also in closing, I’m doing more refinements and adjustments to foam distribution on surfboards, customized for each rider.
What’s your shaping philosophy?
Awe come on, don’t you see the stars out there. . . riding the Earth’s ocean swells, pouring onto land fall? All is well, wow! Each Pendoflex is completely hand-shaped and glassed by Steve Pendarvis, with paint by Cher and Steve, and lots of love to our clients! Hooti! Hoo!
Who is your biggest shaping influence?
My largest shaping influence is every single one, and “that’s that, says, Nat!” For instance George Greenough, Skip Frye, Stevie Lis, John Holly, Ben Ferris, John Riddle, Larry Gephart, Bob McTavish, Wayne Rich and Hanky Warner.
What do you consider to be your expertise?
My favorite expertise is evolving my Pendoflex high speed torque tail surfboards, as well as building the boards, making fins and painting. Tons of fun!
Thanks, Steve. Have a great day!
Hmmm. . . that’s a warm and fuzzy. Having a great day is definitely the idea! Cowa-flexit!
